SkyLine Rotorua
Let’s delve into one of our favorite attractions that kept us coming back for more: Skyline’s street luge tracks. With five distinct tracks catering to various thrill levels, it’s an adrenaline junkie’s paradise. Our first day there was met with wet, rainy weather, but it only added to the excitement.
Having pre-booked five runs along with dinner at the Stratosphere restaurant (which we previously reviewed), we kicked off with two runs before dinner. Despite the rain intensifying, we refused to let it dampen our spirits. Once we hit the tracks, the rain seemed inconsequential as we slipped and slid down, turning the wet conditions into an exhilarating challenge.
On our final day in town, we made the wise choice to arrive bright and early when Skyline opened its doors. This decision proved to be golden, as we encountered no lines and had the tracks to ourselves without families opting for a slower pace. With each run, laughter filled the air as we playfully challenged one another. Each cart offered a slightly different experience; I even found myself on one with fading brakes, adding an extra thrill to every turn as I navigated the course with sheer determination.
This activity proved to be a hit with the whole family. Our teenage boys reveled in every moment, while my wife eagerly joined in on the fun, challenging us at every turn. With carts reaching speeds of 25-30mph, everyone stayed together, regardless of their daredevil tendencies. Over two sessions, we completed a total of 12 runs, and not a single one disappointed.
To anyone visiting Rotorua, I wholeheartedly recommend dedicating some time to this unforgettable experience. You won’t be let down!
Kaituna River White Water Rafting
This is an absolute must-do experience, with the claim of the largest commercially rafted waterfall being just one of the highlights. From the moment you arrive at basecamp, every detail is meticulously planned to ensure an unforgettable adventure. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the staff go above and beyond to make you feel right at home.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with humor and warmth by the guides, immediately putting us at ease. After donning our suits, life vests, and helmets, we hopped on a bus for a short journey—across the street, of all places. Our guide, Sam, was nothing short of exceptional. His wit and humor kept us entertained throughout the entire experience, which lasted approximately 45-60 minutes on the river.
From thrilling rapids to exhilarating drops, there wasn’t a dull moment on the water. Opportunities to swim through rapids added an extra layer of excitement, ensuring everyone got their fair share of thrills. Upon returning to basecamp, hot showers awaited to warm us up before changing. And to cap off the adventure, we gathered to view the photos captured by the talented river photographer, offering a glimpse into our wild journey through the woods.
This rafting excursion easily ranks among the best we’ve experienced worldwide. The water temperature was perfect, and for those feeling the chill, wetsuit bottoms, jackets, and boots are available. I’d recommend bringing a towel, warm clothes for afterward, and some flip flops for changing. Other than that, every aspect of the trip is expertly taken care of, ensuring an unforgettable adventure from start to finish.
ZORB Rotorua
We’ve all come across Zorbing in our online explorations and New Zealand advertisements, so it felt like a must-try activity. We booked our experience through Viator for two runs, not quite knowing what to expect but eager to give it a shot. Upon arrival, we checked in and filled out consent forms before receiving wristbands indicating our chosen runs: the basic straight track and the thrilling zig-zag descent.
After changing into our gear, we took a moment to warm up in the hot tubs at the bottom before boarding the van to the starting gates. My wife and I eagerly hopped into the first ball together, feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty as we were sealed inside and pushed over the edge. The ride was undeniably thrilling, but we couldn’t help but wonder what could enhance the experience. Exiting the ball felt like a rebirth as we emerged, drenched in water.
With no rush to return to the top, we indulged in another soak in the hot tub, discussing our next run. The boys, keen for more excitement, opted for additional runs, unlocking access to all four tracks: straight, zig-zag, circular, and the exhilarating steep hill. The latter was a unanimous favorite, promising a near-freefall experience at top speed.
Meanwhile, my wife and I savored the leisurely pace, soaking up the sun and the spectacle of watching the boys’ descents before embarking on our second run. The zig-zag track proved to be the highlight for us, despite the challenge of staying upright as we were tossed about inside the ball.
Overall, we found the experience to be enjoyable, though perhaps a tad pricey for what it offers. Wearing a shirt inside the Zorb is advisable to prevent any discomfort from the seams. The hot tubs provided a welcome relaxation spot while waiting for our turn. If budget isn’t a concern and you’ve always harbored curiosity about rolling down a hill in a giant ball, it’s certainly worth a try. However, having checked it off our bucket list, we don’t feel compelled to repeat the experience.
Off Road NZ - Go Karts
Who doesn’t adore a thrilling Karting track with lightning-fast Go Karts? This gem is situated just a bit outside of Rotorua, but trust me, the drive is well worth it. Despite our initial attempt to book online for the 30-minute race we desired, we ended up opting for a more spontaneous approach and walked in. Since it was midweek, the place was relatively quiet, with only one other racer joining us for our adrenaline-fueled adventures.
After getting ourselves geared up with suits, gloves, and helmets, we received a brief driver briefing. Our package included a 10-minute qualifying session, during which we familiarized ourselves with the track, and the fastest lap determined the lineup for the first race. The course offered exhilarating stretches for gaining speed along with challenging hairpin turns that demanded precision and skill.
In the first race, we lined up and unleashed our competitive spirits for a thrilling 10 minutes. Treating it like our own private race, we pushed ourselves to the limit, leaving one racer to navigate the course at his own pace. After the checkered flag waved, we were swiftly lined up for the second and final race.
The second race presented a delightful twist. The order was reversed, and we were sent off one by one based on our finishing positions from the first race, ensuring that we’d all have an equal chance to shine in the end. This setup made for a dynamic and enjoyable experience, as faster racers challenged slower ones, and we all had the opportunity to engage in tight, adrenaline-pumping races.
Off Road NZ proved to be a fantastic time, and it’s clear that the team is passionate about what they do. With a myriad of other off-road adventures available, it’s a destination worth revisiting. Ultimately, it was a fantastic way to settle some family rivalries and determine who truly reigns supreme on the track. I highly recommend opting for the 30-minute session to fully immerse yourself in the thrill of two exhilarating races.
